Treatment for Pet Allergies & Dermatology Conditions
Camrose Veterinary Hospital is pleased to offer pet allergy and veterinary dermatology services. Proper pet skin and coat care is an important component to your pet’s health and happiness. If your pet is experiencing recurrent ear infections, inflamed toes and ears, or generalized itchy skin, a trip to the vet for an exam and an allergy test is recommended. There are a wide variety of potential causes of animal dermatology and allergy problems, such as:
- Parasites—Fleas, ticks, mites, scabies, and ringworm
- Environmental allergies—Grass or pollen
- Food allergies
Pet Allergy Testing
When pet dermatologic conditions arise, it is vital to diagnose the source of the problem to administer the proper treatment. Food allergies are tested via food trials to identify the allergen. Environmental allergies are tested by utilizing in vitro blood testing, which involves collecting a sample of your pet’s blood and measuring the allergic response in the lab. Parasitic allergy testing is performed via physical exam or skin scrapings.
Pet Allergy Treatment
Based on the allergy test results, a proper treatment protocol will be developed. If the source of the allergen cannot be easily avoided, an allergen desensitizing treatment plan will be designed, which can be administered by the pet’s owner.
